Every year in Spain you need to do a declaración de la renta, a tax return in Spain, although if you earn less than 21000 Euros it is not obligatory. The Declaración refers to the tax year which is the same as the calendar year ie January to December and you make the declaration between April and June.
Paying more tax and then getting it back from the government is a good way of saving as payments are made back usually in the months leading up to Xmas. ;-)
