Culture Spain, Las Fallas and the erection of the effigies (La Planta)!
So, Las Fallas is almost upon us! Indeed, it starts in earnest tomorrow (15th March) and then continues until Saturday (19th March) – with the same dates annually, irrespective of how those dates land in the week. However, I should stress that this is not a fiesta that celebrates the culture of Spain – this is about Valencian culture and occurs only in Valencia province!
Needless to say, there is great excitement on the streets of Valencian towns even now, with firecrackers starting to go off everywhere. There have already been a number of major parades and Valencia city is, today, on its 14th Mascaletá, having had one of the most incredible firework displays that I have ever seen, a week ago. This was on Valencia beach and absolutely fantastic!
The ninots (effigies) are now starting to appear on the streets of the towns and villages of Valencia province and the Las Fallas organisers in each barrio (district) are beginning to erect them. This is no simple task and often, for the biggest ninots, involves heavy lifting gear and huge cranes! Incredible though it may seem, the ninots photgraphed here are of modest size…
However, just look at the wonderful detail – the terrific artistry of the ninots and the fabulous sculpturing. Indeed, it is almost too incredible to think that in only some five days or so all that will be left will be a few ashes.
Meanwhile, everyone is hoping that the current dull weather will clear up. This may be wishful thinking, as Las Fallas is notorious for having poor weather. In fact, the Valencians say that spring (and the good weather) starts after Las Fallas. Let us hope that this year they are wrong!
